lululemon announced a new senior leadership structure on 7 October 2026, intended to connect product, brand, operations and communications more closely. The company created President and Chief Product Officer and Chief Operating Officer roles while beginning searches for Chief Brand, Communications and Technology Officers. Differentiated product, a distinctive brand and a consistent guest experience sit at the centre of the announcement.
A brand problem is not always a communications problem
For K2 REFRAME, the significance is that brand renewal is treated as more than a campaign task. The brand a customer encounters is made by the product, the store, delivery and the ownership of problems as much as by what marketing says. Communication is only the visible surface of that system.
The new product role brings design, merchandising, footwear, innovation and materials science onto one line and is charged with translating brand strategy into product. The operations role will connect the value chain from sourcing and production through go-to-market and fulfilment. The planned brand role will unite creative expression, store experience, community and partnerships under one remit.
This allocation of responsibilities shows why positioning is more than a communications statement. If a brand claims technical innovation, community or a premium experience, budgets, product calendars, store priorities and performance measures must support the same choice. Otherwise the promise creates an expectation the business cannot produce.
Turning positioning into authority and accountability
The decisive organisation-design question is not who reports to whom, but where choices are made. Who has the final word when product distinction conflicts with a cost target? Which principle resolves global consistency against local need? How much of the store experience is protected from short-term sales pressure? Brand strategy should provide criteria for these tensions.
More senior roles do not automatically create more coherence. If product, brand, operations, technology and commercial teams each add a separate integration layer, new approval loops can replace speed. An effective structure makes shared objectives, decision rights and trade-offs visible instead of multiplying intersections.
Creative direction in this model is not merely the control of aesthetic quality. It establishes the shared language that translates strategic intent into product detail, store behaviour, digital flow and community experience. Strong creative direction does not make every team look identical; it helps each touchpoint produce the same meaning appropriately.
Do not confuse a new structure with a result
lululemon’s announcement does not yet prove an effect on brand relevance, product performance or growth. Structural change is a hypothesis, not an outcome. Its value can be assessed through the speed and success of distinctive products, consistency in the guest experience, decision time across teams and a stronger reason for customers to choose the brand.
If there is a gap between your company’s brand promise and its customer experience, do you need another campaign, or a redesign of how decisions get made?
